The Desert Eagle is a semiautomatic pistol caliber gas-operated shooting, designed in the U.S. by Magnum Research and manufactured primarily in Israel by IMI (Israel Military Industries), now Israel Weapons Industry. The production was moved to Saco Defense in Maine between 1996 and 2000, hence the name century, but returned to Israel when Saco was acquired by General Dynamics. White of Magnum Research, who patented a mechanism for gas-operated gun shot in January of 1983. This established the basic shape of the Desert Eagle. The Desert Eagle employs a gas-operated mechanism normally found in rifles, unlike the short recoil mechanisms or inertia of masses that are commonly used in semiautomatic pistols. Unlike most pistols, the barrel does not move during shooting. When a cartridge is fired, the gases are led through a small hole in the barrel near the breech of this. The gases travel forward through a small tube under the barrel to a barrel near the muzzle.
